Mother Hulda

From: http://www.authorama.com/grimms-fairy-tales-21.html

A widow had two daughters; one was pretty and industrious, the other was ugly and lazy. And as the ugly one was her own daughter, she loved her much the best, and the pretty one was made to do all the work, and be the drudge of the house. Every day the poor girl had to sit by a well on the high road and spin until her fingers bled. Now it happened once that as the spindle was bloody, she dipped it into the well to wash it; but it slipped out of her hand and fell in. Then she began to cry, and ran to her step-mother, and told her of her misfortune; and her stepmother scolded her without mercy, and said in her rage: "As you have let the spindle fall in, you must go and fetch it out again!" Then the girl went back again to the well, not knowing what to do, and in the despair of her heart she jumped down into the well the same way the spindle had gone. After that she knew nothing; and when she came to herself she was in a beautiful meadow, and the sun was shining on the flowers that grew round her. And she walked on through the meadow until she came to a baker's oven that was full of bread; and the bread called out to her: "Oh, take me out, take me out, or I shall burn; I am baked enough already!" Then she drew near, and with the baker's peel she took out all the loaves one after the other. And she went farther on till she came to a tree weighed down with apples, and it called out to her: "Oh, shake me, shake me, we apples are all of us ripe!" Then she shook the tree until the apples fell like rain, and she shook until there were no more to fall; and when she had gathered them together in a heap, she went on farther. At last she came to a little house, and an old woman was peeping out of it, but she had such great teeth that the girl was terrified and about to run away, only the old woman called her back. "What are you afraid of, my dear child? Come and live with me, and if you do the house-work well and orderly, things shall go well with you. You must take great pains to make my bed well, and shake it up thoroughly, so that the feathers fly about, and then in the world it snows, for I am Mother Hulda."
As the old woman spoke so kindly, the girl took courage, consented, and went to her work. She did everything to the old woman's satisfaction, and shook the bed with such a will that the feathers flew about like snow-flakes: and so she led a good life, had never a cross word, but boiled and roast meat every day. When she had lived a long time with Mother Hulda, she began to feel sad, not knowing herself what ailed her; at last she began to think she must be home-sick; and although she was a thousand times better off than at home where she was, yet she had a great longing to go home. At last she said to her mistress: "I am homesick, and although I am very well off here, I cannot stay any longer; I must go back to my own home." Mother Hulda answered: "It pleases me well that you should wish to go home, and, as you have served me faithfully, I will undertake to send you there!" She took her by the hand and led her to a large door standing open, and as she was passing through it there fell upon her a heavy shower of gold, and the gold hung all about her, so that she was covered with it. "All this is yours, because you have been so industrious," said Mother Hulda; and, besides that, she returned to her her spindle, the very same that she had dropped in the well. And then the door was shut again, and the girl found herself back again in the world, not far from her mother's house; and as she passed through the yard the cock stood on the top of the well and cried:
"Cock-a-doodle doo!
Our golden girl has come home too!"
Then she went in to her mother, and as she had returned covered with gold she was well received.

So the girl related all her history, and what had happened to her, and when the mother heard how she came to have such great riches she began to wish that her ugly and idle daughter might have the same good fortune. So she sent her to sit by the well and spin; and in order to make her spindle bloody she put her hand into the thorn hedge. Then she threw the spindle into the well, and jumped in herself. She found herself, like her sister, in the beautiful meadow, and followed the same path, and when she came to the baker's oven, the bread cried out: "Oh, take me out, take me out, or I shall burn; I am quite done already!" But the lazy-bones answered: "I have no desire to black my hands," and went on farther. Soon she came to the apple-tree, who called out: "Oh, shake me, shake me, we apples are all of us ripe!" But she answered: "That is all very fine; suppose one of you should fall on my head," and went on farther. When she came to Mother Hulda's house she did not feel afraid, as she knew beforehand of her great teeth, and entered into her service at once. The first day she put her hand well to the work, and was industrious, and did everything Mother Hulda bade her, because of the gold she expected; but the second day she began to be idle, and the third day still more so, so that she would not get up in the morning. Neither did she make Mother Hulda's bed as it ought to have been made, and did not shake it for the feathers to fly about. So that Mother Hulda soon grew tired of her, and gave her warning, at which the lazy thing was well pleased, and thought that now the shower of gold was coming; so Mother Hulda led her to the door, and as she stood in the doorway, instead of the shower of gold a great kettle full of pitch was emptied over her. "That is the reward for your service," said Mother Hulda, and shut the door. So the lazy girl came home all covered with pitch, and the cock on
the top of the well seeing her, cried:
"Cock-a-doodle doo!
Our dirty girl has come home too!"
And the pitch remained sticking to her fast, and never, as long as she lived, could it be got off.

Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House (Dutch: Anne Frank Huis) is a historic house and biographical museum dedicated to Jewishwartime diarist Anne Frank. The building is located at the Prinsengracht, close to the Westerkerk, in the city center of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
During World War II, Anne Frank hid from Nazi persecution with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the 17th-century canal house, known as the Secret Annex (Dutch: Achterhuis). Anne Frank did not survive the war, but in 1947 her wartime diary was published. In 1957, the Anne Frank Foundation was established to protect the property from developers who wanted to demolish the block.
The museum opened on 3 May 1960. It preserves the hiding place, has a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, and has an exhibition space about all forms of persecution and discrimination. In 2013, the museum had 1.2 million visitors and was the 3rd most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

Building History:

Canal houseThe house — and the one next door at number 265, which was later purchased by the museum — was built by Dirk van Delft in 1635.The canal-side facade dates from a renovation of 1740 when the rear annex was demolished. It was originally a private residence, then a warehouse, and in the nineteenth century, the front warehouse with its wide stable-like doors was used to house horses. At the start of the 20th century a manufacturer of household appliances occupied the building, succeeded in 1930 by a producer of piano rolls, who vacated the property by 1939.
World War IIOn 1 December 1940 Anne's father Otto Frank moved the offices of the spice and gelling companies he worked for,Opekta and Pectacon, from an address on Singel canal to Prinsengracht 263.The ground floor consisted of three sections; the front was the goods and dispatch entrance, behind it in the middle section were the spice mills, and at the rear, which was the ground floor of the annex, was the warehouse where the goods were packed for distribution. On the first floor above were the offices of Frank's employees; Miep GiesBep Voskuijl andJohannes Kleiman in the front office; Victor Kugler in the middle; with Otto Frank in the rear office above the warehouse and below the floors which would later hide him and his family for two years until their betrayal to the Nazi authorities. The Achterhuis (Dutch for "back house") or Secret Annex — as it was called in The Diary of a Young Girl, an English translation of the diary — is the rear extension of the building. It was concealed from view by houses on all four sides of a quadrangle. Its secluded position made it an ideal hiding place for Otto Frank, his wife Edith, two daughters (of whom Anne was the younger), and four other Jews seeking refuge from Nazi persecution. Though the total amount of floor space in the inhabited rooms came to only about 500 square feet (46 m2), Anne Frank wrote in her diary that it was relatively luxurious compared to other hiding places they had heard about. They remained hidden here for two years and one month until they were anonymously betrayed to the Nazi authorities, arrested, and deported to their deaths in concentration camps. Of the hidden group, only Otto Frank survived the concentration death camps. After those in hiding were arrested, the hiding place was cleared by order of the arresting officers and all the remaining contents (clothes, furniture, and personal belongings) of the Frank family and their friends were seized and distributed to bombed-out families in Germany. Before the building was cleared, Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, who had helped hide the families, returned to the hiding place against the orders of the Dutch police and rescued some personal effects. Amongst the items they retrieved was The Diary of Anne Frank.

Museum History

Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms. But by 1955 the company had moved to new premises and the entire block to which the building belonged was sold to a single estate agent who served a demolition order with the intention of building a factory on the space. A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.
The Anne Frank Foundation was set up by Otto Frank and Johannes Kleiman on 3 May 1957 with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building. In October of that year the company who owned it donated the building to the Foundation as a goodwill gesture. The collected funds were then used to purchase the house next door, Number 265, shortly before the remaining buildings on the block were pulled down as planned. The building was opened as a museum to the public in 1960.
The former hiding place of Anne Frank attracted a huge amount of interest, especially as translations and dramatisations of the Diary had made her a figure known throughout the world. Over 9,000 visitors came in its first year. In a decade there were twice as many. Over the years the building has had to be renovated to manage such a large number of visitors, and so it closed temporarily in 1970 and in 1999.
On 28 September 1999 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands reopened the museum, which now incorporated the entire building between exhibition spaces, a bookshop, and a cafe, and featured the offices in the front house reconstructed to their state in the 1940s. In 2007, over one million people visited the museum.
On display at the museum is the Academy Award that Shelley Winters won, and later donated to the museum, for her performance as Auguste van Pels in The Diary of Anne Frank. The award now sits in a bullet-proof glass case in the museum.
In 1998 the Anne Frank Zentrum in Berlin was opened, after the completion of a cooperation agreement with the Anne Frank House.

MATSWAPATI!!!

On saturday, september 27 2014, SMAN 3 Bandung held  an event called MATSWAPATI. It was an art and culture festival. It concentrated on West Java's culture. The organizers for this event include 10,11,12 graders and teachers as well. I am one of the organizers so I needed to be at the venue at 5 am but because I was sloppy and I was tired, I woke up late and arrived at Lapangan Bali (where Matswapati was held) at 6:30. It was embarrassing because I walked to the venue alone while everyone was staring at me. Thank God my friends picked me up at the gate.

I was in the division of decoration so I worked before the D-day but that day, I got in to logistic. What I worked in the division of decoration was basically making the venue looks pretty. I and my friends made many ornaments to be put all over the place. I personally think we did a great job. The job costed my skirts to be colorful because of all the paint, I felt like an artist already. But anyway, At 7 am, when my 10 grader friends were going to the parade, I carried heavy music instruments and stuff like those. That's basically what I did mostly in Matswapati. But because I'm a girl and the logistic people didn't expect me to be muscular and carry all the equipments, I got many chances to watch the performances on stage.

I watched many Sundanese cultures such as traditional dance, music, puppet show, and martial arts. When the gate officially opened, there were speeches from the school principal, the head of the organizers, and the mayor. It went on with Jaipong Dance, and was continued with sundanese martial art which I forgot what the name is. And then I did the mob dancing with my teacher and my friends. We were recorded but I decided not to care.

Every class must have a stand. My class, X IPA 3 had a game stand. The game was called pepeletokan. Pepeletokan is basically a bamboo shotgun and the bullets are substituted by wet newspaper. We had to shoot on the target and get points and win prizes. It was sticky but still fun. The prizes we prepared were traditional candies, puppets, T-shirts, and a handmade matswapati crown. Back to carrying equipments, my energy was drained really quickly so I bought lunch from the food section. The food festival was consisted mainly by sundanese food but there was a kebab stand and since I wasn't in the mood to eat rice, I ate kebab. I bought milo too. I can tell I bought like 4 glasses milo during matswapati due to lack of energy and sunny weather. Also a glass of lemon tea, and two bottles of mineral water.

They announced the winner of the parade and it was my class! Yay! We won 1 million rupiahs. We are rich now.

The following performance was from Musik Klasik 3, an extracurricular for those who likes and is able to play classical music. The performance was a mix of classical and traditional music. I watched them from backstage. There was Tiloe's Theater (T'st)  too. You can already tell what this extracurricular is. The play was funny for sure. They never fail to make me laugh. And then many performances followed, such as SambaSunda, I really liked their performance because the singer's voice is good and the music is really cool too. I mean traditional music is always grande. When it was time for SambaSunda to perform, they complained that they lost their Rebana (a traditional drum kind of thing) and the logistic people ran to SMA 3 and to the venue back and forth only to look for the replacement but it turned out that their Rebana was still in their car. Okay. Then followed by Saung Angklung Udjo, and a puppet show. We call it wayang here. I didn't get the chance to watch the wayang because I was eating baso tahu with my friend Iffa, at the food section. After I ate, I hurried back to the backstage and helped the logistic people. Finally it was time for Barsena. I saw him backstage but I decided to watch him in front of the stage. He was really cute and he has such an amazing voice. I've been crushing on Barsena since like a year ago and finally got the chance to see him live. I sang along with my friends and jumped and danced and just had the time of my life. Then it was finally the highlight of the show, Glenn Fredly. Most of his songs were about love, either heartbreak or cheesy songs but since I am a hopeless romantic I enjoyed the show. He also gave speeches about our former president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on how Glenn was disappointed by SBY and his decisions. We danced dangdut style with Glenn Fredly and I think I kinda gave all my moves out with my friends because dancing is fun and there's just no time to be embarrassed.

After Glenn Fredly, there was a fire attraction and it was really pretty with all the fire and stuff. The fire attraction was some guys blowing fire out of their mouths. I have no idea how they did that. Maybe their ancestors were dragons. Black sky and fiery orange really was a nice combination of colors. I wish I could freeze Matswapati and be in it for God knows when, but like all great things, it must come to an end. When it ended, I went out to buy fresh milk with a touch of mocca and it was goooooood. And then I came back to the venue, grabbed my bag, and went home.

Thank you SMA N 3 Bandung for this event, I am happy that I am part of this. XXX

Something Unforgettable In My Life

Hello there! So apparently miss wiwin asked us students to write something that is unforgettable. And out of all moments that I experienced in life, I chose this story cause I think it's the only one that's worth telling. Ha ha ha.

It happened when I was in 7th grade at 5 Junior High School. I went to Malaysia and Singapore to perform traditional arts. I traveled with my Dazzling Indonesia team. It was a team, created by my violin teacher. The team was consisted of musicians and dancers.  I think there were at least 50 people, coming from Bandung, Jakarta, and Padang. Now  I'm about to tell you the details.

Months before we actually go, there was always a rehearsal every weekend. We learned to dance and play traditional music. At the first rehearsal, my legs hurt so badly with all the dancing, especially saman. But no regrets, it was fun. No kidding though I think you should take your time to learn how to dance something traditional because in the end, who will?  Anyway, i concentrated on dancing rather than playing violin, because  I was given the chance to show my country off and  I wanted to ace it. The rehearsal was always tiring but also fun. The problem was that we had to sacrifice our weekend to rehearse, but trust me it was worth it.

After months of rehearsal, we  finally flew to Malaysia. I went to the airport at like 6 am? And then shared a cupcake for breakfast with my friend. The cupcake was vanilla flavored with fondant on top, covering the cupcake. As you can imagine, too much fondant means too sweet therefor, not so good. After the cupcake, we took pictures while we were waiting for the flight. I mostly slept during the flight. Even though half of the passengers were my  friends and it was really noisy like we owned it. I honestly dont like flying, it gives me headache and earache. But I love airports though,  we can find bookstores and food there. Basically the things I need in life. Anyway, i forgot how long we flew. I think it was like 3 hours or something.  After we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, we had lunch and traveled all over Kuala Lumpur. Due to my inability to remember everything, I only remember that we went to the petronas tower and took pictures. Then, we took an 8 hour bus ride to Kuala Terengganu. I got plenty of time to sleep and eat.

I arrived in Kuala Terengganu at night and slept in a dorm. In the morning I had nasi lemak for breakfast. I'm honestly not a fan of nasi lemak. Well I lost 3 kgs while in Malaysia, I guess my tounge doesn't really fit to their taste. And back to topic, after I had breakfast I and my team drove to the town square. We were there to meet our hostparents. My hostparents were nice. I was driven to their house and saw an enormous hamster cage. Yes, I saw like 30 hamsters. After taking a rest I went back to rehearsal until midnight.

The next day, my hostfamily and i went to the supermarket. We bought food supplies. Oh I forgot to tell you. My breakfast was always toast with sarikaya jam, and boiled eggs with pepper. Anyway, after going to the supermarket, I went to the public hall to rehearse and to perform. I really had a great time when performing. Like, the audience, the lightings, the vibe.... And the pride to show Indonesia off is just something you can't simply forget. The show ended at midnight.

In the morning I went to school. The school was a boarding school named SMK Ibrahim Fikri. I was the only one who didn't wear hijab there so I felt awkward. I made friends with plenty of people but the one I remember the most is Anies. She's mute but she's beautiful and also very nice. We had a hard time talking to each other because I needed a translator for the sign language, and I also don't really understand the translator because I can't speak Malaysian. At night, I perform at the school.

I went to the beach and traveled around Kuala Terengganu the next day. It was fun going with my team. We played our instruments all the time. I like it when my friend plays his saxophone. After hanging out, we said goodbye to our host-family and headed off to Johor Baharu. Another long bus ride... We stayed in a sport dorm. We played games, music, and talked all night but finally gave up and sleep. In the morning we went to a chocolate factory. I wanted to be dramatic and cry because all these chocolates but decided not to. But really though I bought this tiramisu chocolate and i didn't regret it. So this tiramisu chocolate is this milk chocolate covered almond with a dash of heavenly tiramisu powder. So when you eat it, it'll be bitter at first and sweet at last. Must. Eat. It. Again. Well, after we traveled around Johor, we headed off to Singapore. We traveled, shopped (and bought chocolates) and performed there. It was just a 2-days trip. We went back to Malaysia again and in the afternoon we took our flight to Jakarta. It was a silent flight, maybe because everyone was tired. When we arrived at the airport, we took Prima Jasa bus to go to Bandung. I got home at 1 am, if I'm not mistaken.

Well, it was a very interesting experience that's slightly impossible to forget. There are a lot of stories that are unforgettable. This is my story. What's yours?

A Friend of Mine

I have this new friend. Her name is Hanifa Nurul Rahma, but you can call her Iffa. Well, you must call her Iffa. She's my classmate, and my chairmate as well. She was born on November 10, 1998 in Bandung. She has an older brother and a younger sister. Oh and her parents are both lecturers. How cool is that?
She lives in Dago, near Darul Hikam. And her previous school was SMP Mutiara Bunda. She once lived in Japan when she was a little kid, and in the United States of America for 2 years.

What is she like? Well you can spot this reddish-white skin girl with straight hair easily. First thing's first, she is emotional. Like... she will literally scream when she sees a butterfly. And if you shake her bag from behind, she will jump the freak out. She also has this unique laugh that concentrated on the first "ha" only. Almost like a diminuendo. She's smart, and she's fluent in english. One of her hobbies is jogging. I just don't get her.

Many people say we look alike. Some say we're twins. I don't even know in which part of our faces do we look alike. But, we do have many things in common. We basically have the same unproductive hobbies like being lazy, eating, and procrastinating. We both also play the violin. I play the piano and a little bit of guitar. Iffa plays the guitar and a little bit of piano. We have same interests in movies, we like mystery, comedy, and the ones with Jennifer Lawrence in it. We love this movie titled Silver Linings Playbook. Iffa actually remembers some of the dialogues. And, we love books! Fantasy, dystopian, and all sort of things. What's more, we both have only one dimple. Mine is on the left while hers is on the right side of her cheek. We might fake our identity into a cool, independent woman but we honestly watch E Network on our spare time. That's right folks, I watch Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Last thing, we love tumblr and also youtube. Fangirls...

Anyway, that's all i have to say about this new friend. You should get to know her! I guarantee you. So I guess this is the part when i have to say goodbye. Well, adieu!

My Identity

My name is Sandra Meiko Rosanne. I have many nicknames but I usually go by the name Sandra. I was born on May 29th, 1999, in Bandung. It was 8 o'clock in a Saturday morning, if I'm not mistaken. I almost died when my mother gave birth to me, but now I'm still here so I guess I'm a warrior. But let's just not discuss that.

I'm not gonna tell you all the details about my family because it's complicated, honestly. What I know is that I have the greatest mom in the universe and a sister who's also my ultimate best friend. I also have the most hardworking father, he's a miner by the way, which makes him really cool. And, I have two older brothers. They're so fun to chill with.

I have a wonderful life. I like my choices, even the wrong ones. My religion told me to be grateful of everything. In case you're wondering, I'm a muslim. And that's basically my vision. To be a true muslim. Speaking of life, i have hobbies. My hobbies are watching movies, reading books, doing whatever it is that's related to music, lying on my bed while thinking about life, eating good food, and other stuff that does not include fatigue. About good food, good is relative. That's why I'm gonna tell you some of the good food in this world, my version. I love seafood, especially crab. I also love basically all beans and nuts. Kidney beans, cashew, walnut, almond, hazelnut, you name it. Well, you can guess that I love peanut butter. I love chocolate, caramel, and pizza too. I mean, who doesn't?

I am currently studying at SMAN 3 Bandung. I like it here. My previous school was SMPN 5 Bandung. I also liked it there. You just have to like what you do.

There's actually so much more about my identity, I'm just telling you the basic ones. Please, find out about me yourself, I would love to be your friend and surprise you.
